The original name for San Francisco, Yerba Buena is also the name of a wild herb that grows in California. The herb was brought by the Spanish when they established a mission at the site (Mission San Francisco de Asís). After independence from Spain, the town became part of Mexico. Yerba Buena was relinquished to the United States after the Mexican-American War and was soon after renamed San Francisco. A captivating star and floral design block pays homage to the city and its namesake.
