Also known as "The Dog Star," Sirius (Alpha Canis Majoris) is the brightest star in the evening sky. It is twice as bright as Canopus (the second brightest in the night sky) and is found in the Canis Major (The Big Dog) constellation. Although it looks like a single star, it is a binary system consisting of a pair of white dwarfs, found only 8.6 light years from Earth and has is a key reference point for navigators.
