With over a million people, Phoenix, Arizona is the largest state capital in the United States. As the cornerstone of the Phoenix metro area, it is known as the "Valley of the Sun." Originally inhabited by the Hohokam peoples, Phoenix was founded by Jack Swilling, a Civil War veteran. Using the ruins of an old Native American city, Swilling built canals to provide water to this desert city. With the arrival of the railroads in the late 1800's, Phoenix quickly grew to be an agricultural center. With the conversion of farmland into suburbs, the economy has grown as diverse as its population. A striking eight-pointed star, reminiscent of the Northern Lights design, reminds us of Phoenix's sunny nickname as well as the basketball team.
