Hailed as the grand old champion of the tides, Old Barney stands in Barnegat Light, New Jersey. The current lighthouse may have earned its stature in nobility, but the first one built in 1835 did not. The original lighthouse was only 40' high and was intended to steer ships clear of the dangerous Brigantine and Absecon shoals. Upon arriving from Europe, this light was the first to be seen. However, because many ships thought that the variable light they saw in the distance was another ship signaling, causing numerous shipwrecks in the shoals.
