Dating back to Colonial days, Boston, Massachusetts, was an integral part of the "triangular trade" where slaves were traded for sugar and rum. Sugar, as well as molasses, were plentiful and Boston and it was common to make a dish consisting of beans baked in sugary molasses syrup. This signature dish gave Boston the nickname and Boston Baked Beans remain a popular meal. The contemporary broken pinwheel design of this block reminds us of a steaming pot of cooking beans.
